Sint Maarten Netherlands Antilles



Netherlands Antilles collectively refers to the former Dutch governed Caribbean islands. It came into existence post the Second World War in 1948 as an independent country under the Kingdom of Netherlands. This was in order to confer certain amount of autonomy to these islands then under colonial rule. Although it was dissolved in October 2010, these islands are still referred to as Netherlands Antilles. Aruba, Bonaire & Curacao collectively known as Lesser Islands and Sint Maarten, Saba & Sint Eustaitius collectively known as Leeward Islands are the six Caribbean islands that come under the Dutch Antilles as it is informally called.

Talking about Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, it is the southern part of the Caribbean island Saint Martin. The other half is under the governance of French Government. Philipsburg is the capital city of Sint Maarten. It is here where most cruise ships dock and where the Princess Juliana International Airport is located. Philipsburg is the place that is the hotspot for real estate and where there are many accommodation options like Caribbean vacation home rentals available for tourists.

Sint Maarten is well known for beaches and related activities like snorkeling scuba diving water surfing and other water sports. Tourists can opt for Caribbeanbeachfront rentals for a complete beach holiday experience. The most popular beaches on Sint Maarten are the Cupecoy beach, Maho beach, Mullet Bay & Cole bay. The beaches on the Dutch side are not clothing optional like the ones on the French side.

Another tourist attraction in Sint Maarten Island is the casinos. For shopping freaks, the Front Street in Philipsburg is the best option for jewelry, liquors, cosmetics, electronics, etc. For souvenirs you can visit the Back Street. For food, you can try authentic Dutch food or stick to the tried and tested options like the KFC, Mc Donald, etc. If you are looking for nightlife options there are many pubs and bars around the island.
